... but not today with your lagana!
The start of Great Lent is the only day in the year that lagana (flat bread) is sold in bakeries. Unfortunately, it goes stale quite quickly, so it's best eaten within two, maximum three, days.
Happy Sarakosti everyone!
Here's a picture of Mrs Sarakosti with her seven legs, each one representing one week of the fast. As each week (ie Sunday) passes, one leg is chopped off. This was one of the earliest forms of a calendar used in Greek homes. When only one leg remains, then it's Easter Day.

Kali Sarakosti, as always with the time difference, you've gotten off to a head start.
ReplyDeleteMaria, such a pretty looking bread. Are the black seeds Nigella seeds?
ReplyDeleteSending care and huggles, Michelle
Flat bread is to be welcomed this time of the year.
ReplyDeleteHow is made, and what with? I don't think I've come across this on my travels - but then, that's probably because I've not been there at the right time of year.
Maria...I LOVE lagana. We had it with a variety of salads, bought 3...have some left for tomorrow. I hope you had a great weekend! :):)
ReplyDeleteΠολύ ωραία Μαρία μου. Τι έγινε και χάθηκες δια παντός;
ReplyDeleteInteresting about the leg calendar, and the bread looks good. It's nice having special occasion food that you save up for certain events - it makes them seem more important.
ReplyDeleteThis bread tastes incredibly!!! :-D
ReplyDeleteDid you fly a kite? :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you gave me the chance to discover your blog by visiting mine. Your recipes are wonderful!!
I adore Crete and especially Chania. It's so beautiful. I've been there innumerable times and the Cretan cuisine is so unique.
From New Zealand to Crete, what an adventure, what a leap, to change your life like that!

Kali Sarakosti Maria!
ReplyDeleteJust noticed your 2nd comment on my garden - yes, is a pelagonium - the lemon scented one which has pretty little pink flowers and an incredible aroma. I must rescue it by striking some new cuttings.
ReplyDeleteThis variety is grown in Northern NZ to repel wasps!
Kali Sarakosti Maria. i hope you enjoyed your lagana with loads of taramosalata!
