It's August (καλό μήνα - have a good month, as the Greeks say), and it's about time I went on vacation, which traditionally means something like getting away from one's familiar surroundings - in my case, clear blue sunny skies, sandy shady beaches, foreign food (if that's what Cretan food is to you) and nightlife at the old port - with a break away in some exotic place in the world - which means Crete for many Northern Europeans - which offers - you guessed it - sunny skies, sandy shady beaches, foreign food and nightlife by the water's edge, all of which supposedly stresses you out in its planning stages and burns holes in your pockets, with a bout of jet lag each way.
Vacation or staycation, it's all the same to me...
(exotic food: Greek salad, boureki, yemista, all offered under a sunny sky in Hania, three kilometres away from the water's edge - the ferry port would be visible if we chopped down the tree)
I'm drooling at your food, and at the sun (check out my photo tomorrow!), and at the thought of living somewhere where it can feel like a holiday all year round. *Big sigh*
ReplyDeleteStaycating is a great idea. As much as I've enjoyed my days in Greece, my home in Portland, OR on the Wilamette River is also a retreat. You should try the Pacific Northwest. Wonderful farmers markets with fresh local vegetables, meats, fish and more. Great wine country, amazing Pinot Noir. Maria, you would love it as much as I love Greece!
ReplyDeleteOh, looks like there's room at the table for one more place setting. Um, what time should I arrive? :-) How lovely that you can enjoy your meals outdoors like that!
ReplyDeleteKalo mhna! You could try the Libian sea for a change, a trip to the Gorges or checking if Athens is free of athenians during summer! An island like yours is a beautiful place but even its name implies isolation. Reach out, take the kids to a museum, or to see their extended family, make friends. And drink a frape next to pension Teresa (is it still there in the port?) while doing some people watching. Keep your curious eyes open during this stacation and you will love seeing new things, I am sure.
ReplyDeleteJust got back from downtown, which was overwhelmed with tourists (Alaska is a major destination). Just walking in my peaceful front door was staycation today.
ReplyDeleteΚαλό σαββατοκύριακο!
i would have to agree with all of you - staycation wherever one lives is a great way to spend a vacation, as long as you keep your eyes open for new places in your own town!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy it!
