Kleftiko (Κλέφτικο)

Postcard from Hania
I spotted the sign while being a tourist in my town: ELA restaurant, Topanas - within the walls of the old town of Hania - in the Jewish quarter; could not detect the sunken pit for the kleftiko oven. Στην υγειά σου, Laurie!

To Sam

kleftiko

Love, Maria

  2. I think I'm not getting it becasue of cultural differences, but I have to tell you the picture is just charming! It just looks like a nice place to sit and relax.

  3. we should contact the chef police and charge ELA for the misuse of Greek culinary terminology...

  4. Maria, if you write a book, which I know that you intend to do, someone will read your post in 20 - 50 years from now and say that you wrote this in your book, that good kleftiko is made in Crete, which isn't true. Traditional dishes must not be changed.

  5. I think it has been made more than patently clear that ELA's kleftiko, although it may be tasty , is NOT a kleftiko dish. Whilst ELA can call anything by any name it pleases, that doesn't mean the rest of us need to accept it, especially when we know better. (Ahem)

  6. Ah Maria, I like your style! I, too, let out a giggle when I saw this. Well done! :-D

  7. Now, what would have impressed me was if you had actually gone inside, sat down, and ordered the dish then photographed it and posted that. You're getting away awful cheaply here... Squeeze out the 15 Euro plus service and tax, and then come back and tell us if they served you fish. ;)

  8. no, they probably wouldn't serve fish kleftiko, but Laurie's exact same methodology is used in the preparation of ostrich kleftiko in someone else's recipe: http://www.greek-recipe.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article257

  9. Well, anybody can put a silk hat on a pig, but does that make it a prince? I think we all know the answer to that... Take care and good luck with your book.
