Quiz (Kouiz)

Foodies. Apparently, they love food. But do they really know what they're eating, and where their food comes from in the first place? How many foodies can score full marks on this quiz?

1. Here's a really easy one: what colour are these little green blobs going to be in October?
1.CIMG7181 2.CIMG6988
2. This isn't so easy: what are those fresh green pods (and old brown ones) hanging on the branches?

3. These green apple-shaped balls look good enough to eat now, but they won't be ripe enough until late August.
3.P5010034 4.P5010035
4. If you cut and dry these now, they'll make a mild relaxing tea in the winter.

5. What colour are these spiky balls going to be in late September?
5.P5010036 6.P5010037
6. What wild leafy greens grow from the seeds of the plant that gives this bright yellow flower?

7. These beautiful pink flowers bring out one of the sexiest fruits imaginable. What are they?
7.P5010049 8.CIMG7155
8. No, it's not a walking stick. It's edible, but you know it in a much shorter form.

9. What are these white blossoms going to be when they grow up?
9.CIMG6999 10.P5010066
10. What are these furry worms going to turn into when they get older?

11. What can be made from these tiny green blobs?
11.CIMG7230 12.CIMG7232
12. These little buds will grow into a very large crop. What is it?

Leave a comment on this post with the numbered answers and you may win this book,
which is filled with similar recipes that I have already written about. Now you won't have to drag the laptop in the kitchen or print out the recipe when you want to cook Cretan food.

This competition will run for a week. The winner will be announced some time in the following week, where I will also give the answers. If you want to take part, please make sure I can track you down (ie don't leave an anonymous comment). The winner will be picked randomly, even if they don't know all the answers; hey, neither did I until I came to live here!

  7. 1. Well, they are olives, so I am thinking that the finished product will be olive green--though it may well be purple--i thought that some olives ripen to purple. Hmm, maybe it is the PROCESSING that makes some olives purple?
    2. Carob? (If it was elsewhere in the world, I might have thought tamarind, but i don't think that grows here--nor have I seen or heard it used in Greek cuisine.)
    3. FIGS! Mmmmmmmm.
4.Chamomile (I just took a pic of this above Socrates' prison in Athens. Not exactly hemlock tisane....)
    5. Dark pink, purple
    6.Mustard
    7. Good question. A wild guess is Kiwi--but honestly, your hint is what is confusing me more! I will be interested to know what you think a sexy fruit is!
    8. Holy cow is that asparagus BIG! Wow.
    9.Oranges
    10.Mulberries
    11. wine, jelly (in the states) can be made from grapes like these
    12. Hmm, I think it is a nut. (not almond, or walnut, or pecan so it is either cashew, filbert pistachio.) I am going with pistachio since I don't know that cashews are grown here and I don't have any idea what a filbert looks like on a tree!

  11. Maria,
A quiz is a really fun idea. I may have to create my own one day. Thanks for this--it was fun, and humbling!

    1 Olives, green or black
    2 ?
    3 Figs
    4 Chamomile
    5 Pink
    6 Mustard greens
7 Your "sexy" description suggests passion fruit, but I'm pretty sure this is pomegranate
8 looks like a VERY long vanilla bean, but I'm sure that's wrong
    9 oranges
    10 ?
    11 a nice assyrtiko (wine)?
    12 ?

  12. Hmmm, honestly, I couldn't recognize all of them, but thanks to the photos I took in Spain last year, I was able to guess some of them (right, I hope).
    1. these olive tree flowers will turn into olives which, by October, will be probably ready for picking to make a so-called "immature olive oil" - something I'd very much like to try once (apparently this oil is a speciality of a strong, peppery taste, but I've never seen it in any store yet).
    2. that would be pods of a carob tree, if ground they make a good substitute for cocoa.
    3. figs - I've only eaten them fresh a couple of times. Last year they were at 20 euros/kilo (gulp). I love their taste.
    4. chamomile plant is luckily very widely spread in my country, I pick and dry the blossoms myself too. I know of no better stress reliever and eye soother than chamomile tea.
    5. Indian fig opuntia, or prickly pear, will be of yellow-to-red-to-pink sort of color when mature.
    6. hmmm, I'm afraid I don't recognize this plant.
    7. while this one I do - it's a granate apple tree, I had the chance to see it for the 1st time only a year ago. Beautiful flowers.
    8. another plant that puzzles my head...
    9. these blossoms must be from an orange tree (though the leaves differ slightly from those on my Spanish photos)
    10. those "worms" don't remind me of any plant, unfortunately... My fellow commentators might be right and it's mulberry, but I only know how the mature mulberry looks like.
    11. those green blobs belong to a grape vine (I, too, took a similar photo last week :) Hope it gives you lots of grapes this year!
    12. uff, I've spent a while observing this photo but... no, I have no idea. I'm very eager to find out the answer, though.

  14. I would enter, but I only know maybe 1/2-2/3 of these, thus I wouldn't win, and besides, I picked up a Greek edition of this book in Thessaloniki (for way too much money...and before I knew that EVERY SHOP in the Agora in Hania has it for sale, in English, for a better price). I would like to have in English, but reading the Greek text is good practice for me. Or it would be, if I could pry it away from my parents...
