(Apologies to the Finn brothers)
When I open up my fridge,
I see red, I see red, I see red!
I don't even say: 'Yes, please,'
I see red, I see red, I see red!
I see re-e-ed,
Ooh, I see red!

I see re-e-e-e-ed ------
Piled high like a mountain,
they're just right for bottling,
they're - heir - looms,
home - pro - duce!
Squeeze them little cherries,
Put them in the deep freeze, won't you?
They'll - make - good
V -8 - juice!
Cheers - to - you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't know the Split Enz song "I see red" (and how would you if you aren't a Kiwi), you can watch the video. Just imagine a squat dark-haired Greek woman doing what Tim Finn is doing when he sees that woman passing by the window, especially when I woke up this morning and entered the kitchen.
If your taste in music is less ethnic and more globalised, you can just sing along to the following instead:
Old McDonald had a farm,
To-ma-to-ma-to!
And on that farm he raised some toms,
To-ma-to-ma-to!
To-ma-to-ma-to!
And on that farm he raised some toms,
To-ma-to-ma-to!
With a cherry here, and an heirloom there,
toms here,
toms there,
tom toms EVERYWHERE,
Old McDonald had a farm,
To-ma-to-ma-to!
To-ma-to-ma-to!

I plan to grow some heirloom vegetables next year including tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteThe supermarket variety here are rarely good.
Oh, Mrs M is a BIG fan of Crowded House and the Finn Bothers. I don't she has any music from the Split Enz incarnation though.
ReplyDeleteMaria, your kitchen looks just like mine!! I'm cooking my tomatoes down & freezing them. I drooled over your tomato fritters picture the other day. Could you please include your recipe for those? I had never heard of them before. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHa! Love the songs; now they'll be playing in my head all night! The toms look gorgeous. Mine have only just started to turn red, but even so, I don't have near as many as your bounty! The song should be "Mediterranean Kiwi had a garden ...To-ma-to-ma-to!"
ReplyDeleteI eat tomatoes like apples so am headed to the farmers market this morning. There is a little Italian lady who does not speak English who sells produce from her home garden. I always support her...and she has the best tomatoes at the market by far!!!!!!!!!!!!She can barely see to read the weight on the tomatoes but she is probably not charging enough compared to the other commercial farmers.
ReplyDeletePh yes and I have heard of Split Enz!!!!!!!!!!I got you.......

I love tamatoes from gardens!
ReplyDeleteWow! How many tomato plants do you have? I'm overflowing now, but nothing like this. I have enough for us and to give away to 2-3 people a week, and that's it. Looks like you have plenty for LOTS OF WORK!
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel! Tomatoes are coming out of my ears!
ReplyDeleteThis was very funny!:)
Ha ha! Spring fever is nothing compared to tomato euphoria!
