During the 2nd Symposium of Greek Gastronomy, taking place 20-21 July 2013 in Amari, Rethminon, Crete, I will speak about the relationship between "Greek Cuisine, Greek Identity and the Economic Crisis". For the next few days, I'll give you some ideas as to what my contribution may contain.
The indicative prices below apply at the moment, when shopping in Hania:
* Cretan graviera - €13/kg; Naxos graviera - €11/kg; Dutch gouda - €7/kg
* Cretan goat's milk - €2/litre; Greek cow's milk - €1.30/litre; imported cow's milk - €0.85/litre
* Greek beef - €11/kg; French beef - €9/kg
* Olymbos strained yoghurt (made with 100% Greek milk) - €3.30/kg; FAGE strained yoghurt (made with 100% non-Greek milk) - €2.74/kg (€0.70 off the normal price)
* Subjectively good-tasting Mizithra at the supermarket - €7.00/kg; subjectively excellent mizithra at the street market - €6.50/kg
* Papadopoulos filled bicsuits - €1.00 a packet; Oreos - €0.80 a packet
Which ones would you choose if you were faced with these choices?

We have the same problem in Portugal. Supermarkets sell foreign goodies at a lower price than the ones produced in Portugal. In other to continue to afford buying local fresh ingredients, many times from organic farmers, I have decided to cut on pre-prepared item and do everything from scratch. Since we have vegetarian meals 3 times a week, we can balance well our finances, but still, it's shocking to see that foreign produce is cheaper than our own. But I guess that's the price of belonging to the EU and having to abby by the rules of countries that have more power to apply certain measures...
